With a population of around 400 inhabitants, the parish of Zambujal, located about 9 km, southeast, of the village of Condeixa-a-Nova, comprises the places of Fonte Coberta, Póvoa das Pegas, Serra de Janeanes and Zambujal, in a total area of 20 km2.
The harsh mountain landscape produces a strong impression on those who visit it: the olive tree grows on the rocks, the undergrowth tears up the soil with difficulty and the far reaches of the fields stretch indefinitely, seen from the top of the hills; the houses, formed in small clusters – served by narrow streets and away from traffic jams – use, to a large extent, the stone itself as a raw material, becoming a natural part of the region’s physiognomy.
In this fundamentally rural parish, raising sheep and goats is one of the important activities on which its economy is based, allowing the production of one of the best dairy products in the country – the famous Queijo do Rabaçal. In fact, the production of this cheese takes place not only in the village that gives it its name, but also in neighboring areas, such as Zambujal. Although there are currently some industrial production units, this cheese is still, to a large extent, homemade.
Once a town, the parish of Zambujal would be successively annexed to the municipalities of Rabaçal and Soure until finally, in 1855, it definitively became part of the municipality of Condeixa-a-Nova.
